Dance Lessons - Dance Twice a Week to Get Better Faster

My first regular, weekly dancing was in Chicago.

Some people organized a Jewish singles party. They invited a local <a href="http://www.israelidance.info" target="_blank">Israeli Dance</a> group to keep us entertained. None of us could dance, but my Dad taught me to be a good sport, so I joined in.

The Israeli Dancing group left their flyers. I took one and the next Thursday, I went to their dance session.

For the next four months, on Thursday nights, I went Israeli Dancing. The dancing was new to me and at first I was emotionally exhausted after an hour. By the end, I had worked my way up to staying through both the beginner and intermediate sessions.

After leaving Chicago, and after a couple of stops, my travels took me to South Florida. Along the way, I managed to dance most weeks. It took me about a year and a half to feel comfortable on the dance floor and be able to stay for the advanced dancing.

My cousin moved to South Florida and I took her dancing. By that time, we were going twice a week. In only a few months, my cousin was already dancing with the advanced dancers. What took me two years, she accomplished in four months.

Dancing a second night each week makes a world of difference.

When you only dance once-a-week, you miss days here and there. You may end up only dancing twice a month. Progress is slow, because you forget what you learned and have to repeat the same lessons.

When you dance twice-a-week, you get much better faster, more than twice as fast. When you miss a day, you still dance that same week. Instead of dancing only twice a month, you end up dancing six times a month. You progress, because you reinforce what you learned and then move on.

When I started teaching my own Gainesville Israeli Folk Dancing group, even though we had a small community, I organized dancing twice a week. I did not want to wait two years to do advanced dances. My plan worked. We were able to do advanced dances after only a few months.

If you want to progress faster, try dancing twice a week.

I hope you are planning to join us in the celebration of dance, friendship and the good life that is Machol Miami. The event is going to start in less than two months, and the cut off date for "Early Bird" registration discount is November 15^th. I hope that you will be able to register by then, and enjoy the discounted rate.

Machol Miami will take place at the Sheraton in Fort Lauderdale December 24-27. There will be "before" and "after" parties in the JCC on the nights of December 23 and December 27. I hope that you will be able to make it to the whole five nights.

Ron and I have just returned from a trip to Israel about two weeks ago. We met with our two choreographers, Dudu Barzilay and Yaron Malichi. I was looking for two choreographers that not only will be able to present good dances, of themselves and others, but also that will work well together. I was very happy to see the warmth and cooperation between them. Dudu and Yaron were both excited about Machol Miami, each giving us a long list of dances that they would like to teach (some of which are still under construction). All in all I think that we will have an outstanding team this year.

The theme nights this year will be Shabbat on Friday night, Brazilian night on Saturday night and Winter Wonderland on Sunday night. Since Miami does not really have a winter, it is going to be a fantasy night where people can give free rein to their imagination. The Brazilian night is going to be outstanding, with a group of Israeli dancers who will join us directly from Brazil

We finalized the menu with the caterer. It took some work to adjust the menu to the theme nights, and come up with culinary innovations that will surpass the offerings last year. We put up a high bar, and the results seem to be very promising. We also finalized the contract to bring in our fabulous dance floor, the one that we have used for the last couple of years to rave reviews.

So all the preparations are moving along well. The only missing part is you. I hope to see you in the picture, and have you in our circle again.

1st September – We ARE dancing, so please join us before the High Holy Days.

Sunday 26th September – over Yom Tov we will lose a number of Wednesdays, so I am proposing a Catch-up Class from 10.30 - 1pm at Sinai covering material we have taught over the Summer. Can people please let me know if you will make it, as I would like to ascertain numbers.

Sunday 3rd October - Tierra Madre feel good experience. Britannia Hotel, Bramhope - a whole day of Yoga, pilates, reiki and more, featuring circle dances from the Middle East, Europa and South America and even a session of Burlesque (with another teacher!)

6th October – dancing starts again with two 5 week courses on offer:

7.30 - 8.30 pm Simcha dancing for weddings and bnei mitzvah. Anyone with a "do" this year is welcome to learn the steps and patterns that make for a real traditional knees up! We can arrange special teaching sessions by request. We can also "lead" on your big day, to make sure it goes with a swing!

8.30 - 9.30 pm we are covering Dances of Prayer for intermediate and returning dancers. Later in the evening we will dance advanced dances from the Summer Hora Derbyshire and Machol Europa camps, plus the new material from visiting choreographers.

This upcoming weekend hosts an unique Israeli dance workshop in the DC
region. The guest teacher is Meliss Jakubovic Bachar, a young, but expert
Israeli dance teacher and choreographer from Atlanta. She leads the two
largest sessions in Atlanta and is the director of the Atlanta teen
performance troupe named Nitzanim. For more information about Meliss please

Meliss will be teaching during the daytime workshops on Saturday and Sunday
and will be energizing the dancing at both evening dance parties. She will
teach circles, lines, and partner Israeli dances. The dances taught during
the day will be played at the night parties. Below is the schedule.

Moonlight Canoe Tour in the Everglades at Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge

When: Wednesday, April 28, 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm. If you arrive after 6:45, the park entrance gate will be closed and you will not be able to join us.

What: We will be embarking on a guided tour of the wetlands in the everglades. Expect to see alligators and an assortment of birds at sunset, and enjoy the unique experience of the everglades by moonlight. The Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge is the last northernmost portion of the unique Everglades.

Directions to the Park: The Refuge is located about 10 miles west of Boynton Beach, Florida. It is accessible from I-95 and the Florida Turnpike by going west on either Boynton Beach Blvd. or Atlantic Ave. in Delray Beach, until you reach Highway 441/State Road 7. From Boynton Beach Blvd., proceed south on Hwy 441/SR7 for two miles and turn west (right) onto Lee Road. From Atlantic Ave, proceed north on Hwy 441/SR7 for two miles and turn west (left) onto Lee Road. Proceed through the entrance gate (after paying the entrance fee) to the boat ramp – straight ahead with parking before the big levee. If you drive up a big levee, be ready to jump out of the car when you go down and hit the water on the other side.

Campout & Snorkeling at Bahia Honda S.P. in the Keys (Adults Only)

When: Friday, May 14 - Sunday May 16. Meet there any time after 3 pm.

What: Sun, Fun, and Adventure await you as we travel to the Keys and Bahia Honda State Park – described as having the Best Beach in the Continental U.S.! This southern most state park is unique for its beach dune and mangrove landscape nestled in between the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. A fun weekend is planned for you to enjoy water sports, beautiful beach setting, and the usual Mosaic camping fun. Highlight of the weekend will be a snorkeling trip to Looe Key, which is one of the most spectacular living reefs in the Florida Keys. Start the weekend on Friday evening with our Shabbat Dinner to be served about 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, after a leisurely breakfast you are free to go kayaking (requires extra fee), swimming, or sunbathe on the park's beautiful beachfront. There's also the possibility of a Park Ranger guided hike. After a light lunch, we head out to Looe Key for an afternoon of snorkeling. Then back to camp for a hearty dinner. On Sunday, after we pack up, those who wish to explore more of the area will travel to the nearby Key Deer National Wildlife Refuge to view the elusive and endangered miniature Key Deer before heading home. This is one weekend you won't soon forget!

IMPORTANT: This event is for Adults Only. All participants must be 18 years or older. This event has extremely limited availability due to the number of campsites we were able to reserve. Single-person tent camping is NOT encouraged. Find a buddy to share a tent as we have an absolute maximum space for only twelve tents. The entire event is limited to 30 people maximum.

Where: We'll be camping on sites 49-54 of Bahia Honda State Park (http://www.floridastateparks.org/bahiahonda/default.cfm), 36850 Overseas Highway, Big Pine Key, Florida 33043. Phone: (305) 872-2353.

Directions: Bahia Honda State Park is located just south of Marathon at Mile Marker #37 on US 1. Start out by finding your best means to the Florida Turnpike Extension towards Homestead and go south to the end at Florida City. From there, you will follow US 1 south and watch for green and white mile marker signs until marker #37. Enter the park and register with the Park Ranger Station using your own name. You will be assigned a specific tent site in advance and informed of this prior to the trip. Total traveling time is approximately 3.5 hours.

Carpooling: Contact the trip leader who will help in arranging carpools.

Cost for Camping: Mosaic Members pay $38 per person, plus $44 per tent for the weekend. Example: Two people sharing a tent will pay $60 each. The tent fee ($44) is divided up between all persons in the tent plus the $38 per person event fee. Non-members add $5. Your event fee of $38 includes all meals from Friday dinner to Sunday breakfast and all other outstanding costs (use of Mosaic camping and cooking equipment, cutlery, etc.)

Cost for Snorkeling: Snorkeling costs an additional $30 per person and is paid directly to the outfitter on the day of the event so bring this extra money with you. If at least 15 people sign up for snorkeling, we will receive a group discount of $6 each for a cost of $24 per person.
Payment: Along with payment, please send the following information in LEGIBLE FORMAT for park & event registration purposes: Name, Address, Phone, Email Address, Snorkeling or not, Number of people in your tent and who they are, Preference (if any) for your neighboring tent, Vegetarian or not, and whether you plan to arrive by 7:30 pm or not.

"Mostly couples" means longer couples sets with some circles thrown in so
that you can change partners if you want. Of course, you can keep the same
partner for the whole night if you choose.

Erica Goldman (formerly known to all as "Howie's daughter") will return to
Boston for a one-night workshop at MIT! While living in Boston, Erica
performed with many of the local dance troupes including Screaming Sa'adya
and Zikukim, and was the director of Brandeis University's B'yachad. She
was a member of and choreographer for the Mandala Folkdance Ensemble and
traveled to Turkey as a member of the Collage Dance Ensemble to compete in
the Golden Karagoz Dance Competition in 2003. In 2004, she gave up the
snowy winters and the career in software to teach Israeli dance full-time in
Los Angeles. Shortly after moving to L.A., Erica led Israeli dancing on an
episode of the Showtime series "Weeds", after the writer and producer
participated in one of her workshops. She liked it so much she actually
wrote an Israeli dance scene into the show because of Erica! Currently the
Dance Director for Camp Alonim, a Jewish overnight camp where Israeli dancing

is truly an obsession, Erica also teaches dance at both Temple Judea
and New Community Jewish High School. She performs with the Keshet Chaim
Dance Ensemble and performed part of the suite they performed at the Kodak
Theatre for a celebration of Israel at 60, in a show that featured Idan
Raichel, Rami Kleinstein, and Achinoam Nini. Erica runs the popular
"mostly-couples" weekly Israeli dance session in Los Angeles on Monday
nights and co-hosts the Sunday night session with David Dassa. The last
time Erica performed in the Boston area, it was for a performance with
Zikukim at Tanglewood, accompanied by live music by the Boston Symphony
Orchestra. Erica recently completed two marathons (the running-26.2-miles
kind, not the dance kind!) in New Orleans and L.A.

Mostly Couples Night, sponsored by the MIT Folk Dance Club and MIT-Israel,
will be in the Sala de Puerto Rico, on the second floor of the Student
Center (visit http://whereis.mit.edu/map-jpg?selection=W20 for a map). The
Sala is an amazing dance hall with a wooden floor. Kosher for Passover
snacks will be provided. Suggested donation of $5 per person (students and
kids under 18 free).

Saw this proposed on the Rikud Yahoo group and replied there.

Short partner sets of 3 dances followed by a circle dance might be a good way to encourage changing partners.

In Argentine Tango they play a set of 3 dances with a break in between. The 3 dances are all of the same type, like traditional
tango, tango waltz or milonga (quick tango).

When you dance with someone, it is for all three dances. After the set, you dance with someone else.

Program/Housing Update
This year, Hilulim joins Chagigah to celebrate Chagigah's Chai (18th) year. This combination of two great camps is sure to lead to
a most memorable Israeli dance weekend. In addition to tons of dancing, we will have numerous special programs, surprises and
events including a tribute to Tel Aviv's 100th birthday. You can count on this wonderful faculty to create a lot of fun and
excitement on and off the dance floor throughout the weekend.

Regarding housing, there is some good news and some bad news. The good news is that we still have a few semi-private rooms
available on campus in a lovely facility called Nerenberg. It is a new building with nice rooms, a spacious common area, and nice
communal bathrooms down the hall. The bad news is that our semi-private rooms with en-suite bathrooms are now wait listed. But
wait, there is more good news. We still have plenty of space in our dorms/cabins. And, we have opened up a room block at the Lake
Country Inn of Oconomowoc! For those who still want to join us but weren't able to get their preferred accommodation on campus, we

Hi Jeff,

1. Some details of choreography will not be able
to be preserved because choreographers do not know
what we know about what is leadable. Some minor
adustments will need to be made to make some partner
dances work better. The idea is to preserve the
woman's choreography as much as possible and the
man makes the adjustments. This dance offers good
illustrations of this point.

2. The man and woman's footwork is optional and can
be syncopated as long as it does not affect their partner.

3. When separating, the woman's movement is optional
as long as she arrives back to where she is supposed
to be on time.

AW: You could lead the woman's turn easily enough by
modifying your own movement, making connection with the
hands and using your hand to signal the turn.
See point 1 above.

Another possibility is to say this follows point 3 above
and the woman's turn is optional. Then the man would also
have an optional turn at the same point.

AW: The choreography cannot be signaled as done in this video.
Therefore if the choreography must be done as in this video,
it would be a performance dance. However the choreography
could be done close enough for my standards with minor
changes, so for me, this still is a social dance.

For me, a perfomance dance is going to have lifts, drops,
tricks, things that people do not maintain their own balance.
Performance dances will have separate parts for the man and
woman where the woman will not be looking at the man. For
example, she comes forward facing the audience on her own
and does some choreography with the man in the background
that he obviously cannot be leading.

If he can signal the choreography close enough, with only
minor changes to his part, for me that is still social dancing.

and is facing out with the man behind her. The hand hold is RR and LL.
Last week, I perceived this as both dancers doing the same steps as we
sort of grapevine to our own L. Now, I see that the footwork is
different for the man and the woman.

I believe that this is a performance dance. I see no way to lead the
woman's turn after the do si do and the woman's steps as the couple
grapevines to the left as I describe above.

The way that Phil taught this, based on his own video of the
choreographer Marco Ben Shimon, is exactly like this video with one
slight excecption that I do not like. The differene is that Phil taught
the wrap-unwrap sequence releasing his L and her R hand during the
unwrap (so that the woman unwraps herself), whereas I prefer the way it
is done in this video where the hand comes above the woman's head to
unwrap her. That difference is not important, but everything else in
this video is consistant with what Phil taught. So, I don't think that
the dancer is being lazy anywhere.

What do you think? Is this really social dancing?

Israeli Partner Dance Session with Partner Rotation

Hello All,

If you are going to rotate partners, you must have clear rules. Otherwise you are going to have battles.

You do not have to use my rules, but you must have rules that everyone who rotates agrees to follow. The big rules you must address
are:

A. Are women to follow the men or not. (My rule is follow.)

B. Use of force or no force. (My rule is no force.)

Anyone who is unwilling to follow your rules should not be rotating. The teacher needs to enforce your rules to avoid conflict
between dance partners.

Last night I ran a small Israeli Partner Dance session in someone's house. We had five couples, gender balanced. The session went
real well.

Here is the experience makeup.

- Myself : experienced IPD
- One woman, Erin : experienced IPD
- One woman : intermediate Israeli circle dancing
- One man : beginner Israeli circle dancing
- Other six : beginner to intermediate Contra dancers and some other stuff, minimal or no Israeli dancing

All but one person had been to at least one of my Swing or Israeli classes, so they knew my style.

We took our time and taught three easy dances, taking about a half hour per dance. Here are some things I think were important that
worked well for us.

1. Partner rotation was optional. Everyone choose to rotate, even one couple that does not usually rotate.

2. When we got started, I clearly explained the rule that the choreography was for the men. The woman were to follow their man. It
was invaluable to have Erin there, who completely supports this approach. When a woman asked a question about the choreography,
before I could answer, Erin jumped in and said, "whatever your man leads". I told her the choreography, of course, but also
reinforced that she is to do what her man leads.

3. The first and most important reason for the woman to follow the man is to help the man through the dance. When the woman follows
the man, he can focus on the teacher. He feels less pressure, because he does not have to worry that his partner thinks he is
messing up.

When she does not follow, she distracts him. In our experience this overloads his brain and makes it difficult for him to
concentrate. He also feels pressure from his partner to perform at a level he is not ready for. I believe that if the women were not
following, all the men would have quit after the first dance. I would not try partner rotation without the requirement that women
are to follow.

Only once did I notice a woman looking around and I nicely told her to pay attention to her partner.

4. The second important reason for women to follow is make the couple dance as one.

As the women learn the dances, there is a tendency for them to take the step they know that is coming before the man intiates it.
Even when they wait for the step to be intiated, they may complete the step before the man settles his weight and completes his
step. Although these things may not be obvious to someone looking on, they are unmistakable to a partner. When I noticed this
happening, I reinforced to the women that their role is to take each step with their partner.

I also pointed out to the women how much they have to work on irrespective of the choreography, such as balance, a lovely posture,
walking beautifully, gesturing, and expressing themselves through their movement. There is a lifetime of things for them to improve.

5. Since almost everyone had been to my classes, they knew enough not to use force. People still pull and push a little out of habit
and get tense, so I frequently reinforced the need for them to maintain their own balance, relax and have soft hands and arms.

6. Sprinkled throughout the teaching of the choreography, I slipped in tips on communication and technique.

7. During the teaching, I started by calling out every step, so they learn the exact choreography. When the music is playing, I
mainly only called parts, like in a contra dance, so they know where to go. I want them to listen to the music. I would rather take
more time during teaching so I do not need to call as much when the music is playing. Remember the calls are for the men. For
example, in Stav Lavan part 1b, with music I might say "Forward, back, men behind," whereas during teaching it might have been
"Forward, two, three, back, two, three, men behind, two, three, men behind, two, three".

With regular Israeli dancers, during the music, I call much less, often not at all, because I want them to learn to follow visually,
rely on their balance and listening the music.

8. We rotated partners pretty much every time I taught a new element (roughly one to four measures of music). Mostly we rotated at
least three times for each element. We grouped elements into sub-parts (ie. part 1a) and did those with at least three different
partners. When we had enough material, we practiced with the music, again with at least three partners. When we finished teaching a
dance, we did the dance to music twice, rotating partners. Later on, we did the dance again, with yet another partner. The point
being we switched partners a lot, about as often as possible, and it worked well.

Am sure lots of other methods would work too.

Conclusion: As long as you give people clear rules, most people are happy and partner rotation should not be a big deal.

Rotating or Switching Partners and the Light Touch

other expectations. As you rotate partners, people are going to fight with one another about how to do this or that. You would not
have solved much with the one rule.

I agree that the most important skills to aquire first are the woman follows and no use of force. These are the big bad things.

I consider the woman following more important than the avoidance of force. When the woman does not follow, the dance is a battle of
wills.

In my opinion, the woman not following is the biggest root cause of the partner dance issues.

The woman not following is what leads to the most frustration, not the use of force. The use of force is exacerbated because the
woman does not follow. If the woman follows, the use of force will be much less.

If the woman is not following, the people cannot dance together. They can dance near each other, but not with each other.

When the woman does not follow, it confuses both people and makes dancing well impossible.

When the woman does not follow, the people cannot improve.

I want the women to follow all the time, especially when the man is confused and does not know what to do.

For me, if people want to be in our rotation, they need to be willing to play by the rules of our rotation. That means (1) the woman
follows, (2) no force and (3) a willingness to learn the method of Partnership Dancing.

I do the same. If she grabs my hand at all, I disengage.
If she rocks back and tries to pull on me to help her come forward,
I let go. What I usually do is place my fingers on top of her wrist.
Most get the idea pretty fast.

If they are willing, it is possible to dance with a raw beginner,

She is a new dancer. I taught her:
(1) She must follow at all times.
This is easy for beginners.
They are willing to trust you, because they do not know anything.
(2) No force. Everything she does, she does on her own.
This is easy for beginners. No force is natural.
(3) How to orient herself.
In open position, I tell her to keep her shoulders parallel to mine.
In closed position, she is to get into my arms.
(4) As we go along, I point out things, like maintain the connection,
do not reach, keep going.

There are eight or nine videos of her doing advanced Israeli partner dances with no instruction in the choreography, never having
seen the dance, not knowing how to dance.

She was fun to dance with, even though she had trouble taking any steps properly.

All she needed to know to be danceable with was the three items above.

Hello IFD Partners,

Believe one root cause of our Israeli partner dance problems is that we do not know how to dance with a partner.

Getting people to rotate partners without first teaching them how to dance with a partner may not be helpful.

One result could be making people even more frustrated.

One of the reasons people have regular partners is because it is so hard to dance with different people. With a regular partner, two
people can work out some way to dance together.

With non-regular partners, a lot of the time dancing is a wrestling match. That is not enjoyable.

Think we have solved the partner dance problem with our little group in Gainesville, at least for those that are willing to learn.
We rotate partners every dance so everyone dances the same amount. We do dances more than once so everyone gets to do them. Everyone
dances, whether they know the steps or not, regardless of their skill level.

Method for Teaching or Learning Choreography

I added the acronym, follow your NOSE:

N - Notate the dance
O - Observe people doing the dance
S - Style
E - Educate someone

From Jeff:

You can prepare to teach [a dance] as a learning tool, even though you have no intent of actually teaching it. I do that all the
time. Then, when I am doing the dance, I remember the words that I would use to teach it, and that helps me remember the dance
better.

1. I write out the steps in my notation. If I think that I probably know all the steps, then I do this without consulting any video
or outside sources. If I am pretty sure that I do not know a sequence, then I use the video to do the notation. I play small parts
over and over until I can record all the steps in my notation.

2. I watch the video and compare it to my notes, looking for any discrepencies. If I find discrepencies, I make a judgement call as
to whether the video is right or if I am right. If I am not sure, I look for another video and/or ask someone like Jim.

3. Once I am confident that my notes are correct, I look at the video to see if there are any stylistic things that I should add to
my notes. Again, there is judgement here as to whether a particular stylistic thing is the choreography or just how the particular
dancers are doing it. Keep in mind that people sometimes do things incorrectly on the video. Also, sometimes a stylistic thing is
specific to the dance and sometimes it is just the way the choreographer dances in general.

4. I teach an imaginary person the dance. You may want to try a real person like Brian if this is your first teach, but I generally
find that it works fine with an imaginary partner. At this stage I decide details
such as how I want to call out the steps and whether I want to do anything untraditional such as teaching the hardest part first.

Hundreds of new Israeli Partner and Circle dances in 2008

There are hundreds of dances.

Seems like a lot, 200 dances a year, on average 4 new dances each week.

How many can you possibly do in your group?

If the average dance is 3 minutes and if you dance for two hours straight, that is about 40 dances a night.

Your repetoire might be something like this:

- 10 dances you are learning and reviewing that you do each week

- 10 out of 20 favorites that you do every other week

- 20 out of 220 that are part of your rotation and do about once every three months

That gives you about 250 dances in your group's repetoire.

Lets say 20% of your dances are older than ten years, which would be 50 dances. That leaves 200 dances from the most recent ten
years or 20 dances per year.

Therefore you can learn about two new dances a month.

Israeli Partner Dancing Group on Yahoo

The Israeli Partner Dancing group on Yahoo has been going on for a number of months. This group was founded to find partners for people going to camps.

The discussion has led to complaints about partner dance etiquette.

There is a lot of finger pointing and not much responsibility taking in terms of who is the cause of the problem.

The group is trying to make a difference, which is commendable.

I have not participated, even though I think I have the answer to many of the problems, because I am waiting until my book is available.

I have written the book Partnership Dancing (www.partnershipdancing.com) to explain how to dance with a partner.

This book defines the communication method you can use to unambiguously communicate with your partner.

With only three rules and three signals, you can communicate all the choreography in every partner dance.

We have tested this method since 2004 and it works perfectly for every step in every Israeli Partner Dance with few exceptions.

Our ladies who have learned the method of Partnership Dancing can do every Israeli Partner Dance without learning any choreography.

They can do every Israeli Partner Dance better than most advanced Israeli Dancers who know the dance perfectly, even dances that they are doing for the first time without instruction.

By better, I mean they can create a more enjoyable experience for their partner by creating a better experience of two people dancing as one.

Our Solution to Struggling with Your Partner

In Israeli Partner Dancing, people tend to struggle with their partner. This happens because we do not learn how to dance with a partner, so everyone thinks what they are doing is right. Their opinions are enforced by a battle for control during each dance.

In our little group, we have solved this problem by teaching people how to dance with a partner. We have the Social Dance Contract which is the man goes first and the lady follows.

Tests of will are not allowed in our group. The lady is to follow the man at all times, whether he knows the dance or not. She is to follow his mistakes too. The lady's job is to complete whatever the man started. She is to make what they are doing a pleasant experience.

The man has the option of disengaging and not signaling the lady, in which case, if she likes, she can dance her part. This works well if the man does not know the dance and wants to follow what the lady does.

Our Solution to Gender Imbalance and People Left Out of Dancing

In my tiny group (see http://gainesville.israelidance.info) we have addressed all the issues that we know of regarding Israeli Partner Dancing and solved them to our satisfaction.

The first issue is people being left out.

People are left out because they do not have a partner. We solved that problem in these ways.

1. We rotate partners so everyone gets to dance with everyone.

2. We do a dance more than once so everyone gets to do the dance.

3. We switch gender roles as needed. If there are more women, women that want can dance the man's role. If their are more men, men that want can dance the woman's role. Yes, this does mean that sometimes women dance with women and men dance with me.

Israeli Partner Dancing Issues

In Israeli Partner Dancing we have some major problems. These problems are the same, as far as I know, for all choreographed dance styles like Contra Dancing, International Folk Dancing and Square Dancing.

The first problem is when there is not an exact gender balance, people are left out and do not get to do any partner dances. The second problem is dancing with a partner is often a struggle and much less enjoyable than it could be.

The cause of these problems is in Israeli partner dancing we learn choreography. We do not learn how to dance with a partner.

Most Israeli Partner Dancers have little or no experience with any other kind of partner dancing, so they do not know the conventions for social partner dancing. Since there are no rules, everyone is on their own as to what they think is best based. This results in every dance being a test of wills.

To solve this problem, people find regular partners with whom they have managed to resolve, somewhat satisfactorily, their communication issues.

If your regular partner is your spouse, wonderful.

For the rest of the people, regular partners is somewhat anti-social, leaving some people unable to participate, and preventing others from dancing with one another.
